Becoming an NDIS Registered Provider

So, you’re interested in becoming a NDIS Registered Service Provider? Because we deal with businesses of all different statuses, we seem to get asked a lot, by both unregistered providers and people just starting up.

The process can be long and difficult to understand, and you may not be sure where to start. Below we’ve outlined some simple to understand steps to help you get on your way:

  1. Understand the NDIS: The first step is to thoroughly research and understand the NDIS’s purpose, principles, policies, and procedures.
  2. Identify the services you would like to offer: Determine the services that you will be providing under the NDIS and make a list of them.
  3. Meet the eligibility criteria: Ensure that your organisation meets the eligibility requirements for NDIS registration, including being a legal entity, having appropriate insurances, complying with all relevant regulations, and having an appropriate management structure.
  4. Develop policies and procedures: Create policies and procedures that demonstrate how your NDIS services comply with the standards set out in the NDIS Practice Standards.
  5. Apply for registration: Once you have completed all the necessary steps, apply for registration as an NDIS service provider through the NDIS Commission.
  6. Wait for approval: The NDIS Commission conducts a review (audit) of the application and supporting documentation to ensure that it is complete and meets the necessary requirements. Once approved, you will receive a Certificate of Registration as an NDIS provider.
  7. Ongoing compliance: Once registered, your organisation is required to maintain compliance with the NDIS Practice Standards through regular audits and self-reviews. It’s important to note that the process can be complex and time-consuming, so seeking external guidance or support may be helpful to ensure that you are meeting all requirements.

Becoming an NDIS Registered Provider is a long and challenging process. Registrations can take many months to receive after completing (and passing) your initial review and audit, and your organisation needs prepare for this delay in the business plan. During this period, many providers will seek out Plan and Self Managed participants they can service or come to a brokerage arrangement with other registered providers.
